Holme Fell: A Sample of Landscapes is the collaboration between myself and Trev Eales, based on, coming out of, springboarding from, his photographs of the Lake District: Holme Fell in particular, and Hodge Close, an old quarry, as its central node or focus. (A poem within the poem, as it is a quarry within a fell). I am pleased to say that the book will be published on June 1st. Publication details will follow, but you may pre-order here: Holme Fell: A Sample of Landscapes: Amazon.co.uk: Sheppard, Robert, Eales, Trev: 9781916590243: Books. In the meantime, here is a photo of the book and one folio of contents, and a poem and its video-reading :
What follows is one of the few 'conceptual' pieces in the sequence (in contradiction to 'lyrical', and in contrast to some fictional and factual prose passages). It occurs before the 'Hodge Close' 'poem within the poem' and it has an accompanying image that it might be separated from in the book. I read it here:
the twisting of the branches
the branching of the lightning
the lightning of the thinking
the blurring of the distance
the distance of the focus
the focus of the eyes
the selection of the beauty
the beauty of the luminescence
the luminescence of the mind
the dropping of the leaves
the leaving of the dewdrops
the dewdrops of distributive cognition
Trev Eales is a photographer specialising in landscape photography and rock concerts and festivals, based in South Cumbria. He and I met at university in Norwich in October 1974, over half a century ago, and we’ve been in touch over those years. We meet up regularly in Lancaster for discussions and entertainment, though we last met up on Monday 11th May, on his way to review and photograph Emmylou Harris. He has a website here: Trev Eales Photography. You could spend hours lost in his back-catalogue. Here’s an interview with him about his work: Capturing the Festival Spirit with Trev Eales · Lomography. All good things come in threes, so here’s a third site: Articles by Trev Eales’s Profile | eFestivals.co.uk Journalist | Muck Rack. This is a list of links to Trev’s reviews of festivals and gigs for Louder than War, via the Muck Rack site, including the Emmylou Harris.
Here is a 'hub-post' that links with all six of these prefatory posts, sharing sample texts and images (and sometimes videos, as with today's): here: Pages: Trev Eales and Robert Sheppard HOLME FELL: a Sample of Landscapes Number One
My last post featured my diary entry concerning a visit with Trev to Holme Fell late last month: here: Pages: Trev Eales and Robert Sheppard: HOLME FELL: a sample of landscapes, Number Five (an odd one out)
