In a pile of soft boxes lies

a palette knife. You hook it out,

slash together a flash

of lemon-yellow, deep crimson,

magenta.

        This is a process of thinking,

vertebrae aligning in a moving,

extended spine – an enquiry

is spreading.

Who danced and who sat down?

Let’s lean together in this windy world

wound up, take pleasure in all things,

like the grace of dogs, intricate

and difficult.

        Patch through the mosaic

what the body does not remember. Make,

break and fill that space little friend,

for no reason.

I was waiting for meaning when

the tree of animals collapsed

laughing and singing.

in praise of sedimentary rock

Six decades is but a blink in the Zechstein Sea,

with its marine transgressions and its Lopingian epochs

and its thin layer of shale or slate.

I would recommend the apricots that they make

from oxidised sulfur, which was how they spelt “sulphur”

in 1956, because it is yellow.

I would also recommend their selection of waffles

which are labelled Z1 to Z5, respectively like

in 1956, when Japan became a member of the United Nations.

But do not touch the dolomites, however widely dispersed,

because during the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

when Norma Jean Mortenson legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe

and Yul Brynner was ascended by an Austrian

and Jerry Lee Lewis became Britain’s first female judge

they dropped them in the canal with Michel Houellebecq

who is a nihilist and cannot be trusted

to jump out of a birthday cake

in 1956, without putting out all the candles.

 Andrew Taylor is a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Nottingham Trent University. He previously worked at Edge Hill University with Patricia Farrell. On occasion, they would share a train journey to Ormskirk and the walk to the university. Often they would talk about poetry and art. They also shared time together as members of the Edge Hill Poetry and Poetics Research Group. Once they went to Tate Liverpool with creative writing students. They also launched their debut poetry collections together in Liverpool. See here for that event!

"PMB" is taken from Syzem Book Two, an aesthetic/cultural translation of William Blake's Milton Book Two presently in progress (Book One having been published by Veer in 2014). The extract was written perhaps a year ago, w/ Patricia - who first introduced me to the work of Paula Modersohn-Becker and her importance for Rilke, as well as her relevance to any contemporary take on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth (a version of which, perhaps unconsciously, seems to be playing out in Blake's poem) - very much in mind. That is, w/ Patricia very much in mind. For this, much gratitude - and Happy 60th! (GA)

December 1956 Patricia Farrell Celebrations (Introduction and Index to all posts for her)

It happens to us all, and it certainly happened to me: becoming sixty. (See posts beginning here and here for my surprise in November 2015).

This year Patricia Farrell will be sixty on 12^th December 2016. There will be private celebrations.

But I thought a more public celebration of her as an artist, poet, philosopher, teacher, etc etc might be in order. To this end I am planning to put up posts Pages this month, first about her (building a comprehensive list of online resources of her work); then a series of posts dedicated to her by others', homages and dedications - and even birthday wishes! I shall round off with a few poems of my own.

So the first few posts are going to start with facts.

Patricia Farrell lives in Liverpool. She is a poet and visual artist. She co-organised the SubVoicive reading series in London in the 1980s and was a member of the arts group New River Project.  She has collaborated with other writers and artists, most notably Robert Sheppard, as well the installation artist Jivan Astfalck, on the project B*twixst, and with Jennifer Cobbing, and Veryan Weston on the dance piece, A Space Completely Filled with Matter.  Her work is published in a range of magazines and collections, including A New Tonal Language in the Reality Street‘4 pack’ series, as well as individual pamphlets: most recently, Seven Bays of Spirituality (Knives Forks and Spoons Press). She completed a PhD thesis in 2011 on poetic artifice in philosophical writing.  Her collection, The Zechstein Sea, was published by Shearsman Books in 2013.
